The Martinsville softball team played Mooresville Wednesday evening and defeated the Pioneers 7 to 3.
The Artesians had a great first inning scoring 3 runs to jump out to a lead over Mooresville. Elizabeth Snipes led off with a triple and scored on a single up the middle by Jersey Tannehill. Paige Dorsett came to the plate and hit a 2 run home run to give the Artesians a 3 to 0 lead. Martinsville didn’t score again until the 6th inning but their defense was great holding Mooresville to only 1 run. In the bottom of the 6th Macey Staley led off with a single. Ryleigh Dalton sacrificed to move Staley to 2nd. Elizabeth Snipes singled moving Staley to 3rd. Jersey Tannehill then hit a sac fly to left field to score Staley. Paige Dorsett singled to center to score Snipes. Lexi Lucas and Annah Elliott both got a hit, and Dorsett came around to score on Elliott’s hit to right. McKenna Gardner drove in Martinsville’s 4th run of the inning by getting a single to center and scoring Ali Lang, who came in to run for Lucas. Martinsville’s defense held tough in the top of the 7th only allowing 2 runs and securing the win.
Lexi Lucas pitched an outstanding game only giving up 4 hits and striking out 9. Martinsville will be back in action next week facing Edgewood on Monday.
